| If you are travelling as a
student on a gap year or about to undertake a backpacking holiday it is likely
that this type of travel insurance will suit your requirements. If you are not
sure what your insurance requirements are then read the policy documents or speak
to an insurance advisor who will advise you based on your travel details. Good
questions to ask is "are there any geographical restrictions?" and "are
there any restrictions based on the amount of time spent in any one place - such
as a stop over?"
Having worldwide travel insurance can lead to misunderstanding as policy holders
might wrongly assume that they are covered everywhere and therefore for everything.
This is not always the case. Winter sports and other potentially dangerous activities,
even hiring a moped, are often not covered. As is always the case, you should
state clearly if you intend to undertake such activities or choose a level of
cover from you worldwide travel insurance that will ensure you are protected.
As is the case with travel insurance policies designed for backpackers, you
can usually extend your travel insurance cover if you plan to extend your trip.
However, bear in mind that you will have to be organised and extend cover before
your existing worldwide or backpacker travel insurance expires. To illustrate
the importance of this consider a situation where you need to stay longer because
of health reason for which you are claiming expenses. Your insurer may not extend
your policy cover for an existing or ongoing cost - they may offer an extension
only on the basis that no further/additional payments will be made relating to
that particular claim.
